# Teams and limits

> Group workspace members into teams, set a credit spending limit for each team, and see where each team's credits went during the billing cycle.

A **team** is a named group of members inside a workspace, such as Marketing or Design. Use teams
to set one spending limit for several people and to apply model and tool rules to a group. Teams
are in **Settings → Governance → Teams**.

<Callout type="info">
  The Teams page needs **Change workspace settings**, unlike the other
  Governance pages. By default only admins hold it. See [Roles and
  permissions](/docs/governance/roles-and-permissions).
</Callout>

## Create a team

<Steps>
  <Step>
    ### Press "Create team"

    It's at the top right. The dialog has two tabs, **"Details"** and **"Members"**.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    ### Name the team

    **"Team name"** is the only required field. You can also pick a **"Team color"** and add a
    **"Description (optional)"**.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    ### Set a spending limit (optional)

    **"Spending limit (optional)"** is the most the team can spend in credits per billing cycle.
    Leave it empty for no limit; the team then only groups people.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    ### Add people

    On the **"Members"** tab, add people. Before you save, the dialog shows how many people will be
    added and removed.
  </Step>
</Steps>

To change a team later, open its menu and choose **"Edit team"**.

## The Teams page

* **Four tiles across the top:** **Teams** and **In a team** (which also shows how many members
  are unassigned), **Credits used** this cycle, and **Near or over limit**, the number of teams at
  80% or more of their limit.
* **Two tabs,** **"All teams"** and **"Unassigned"**, each with its own search. Each team row shows
  its members and its spending against its limit. Each unassigned person has an **"Assign to
  team"** button.
* **A team's own page** opens when you select it: its details, members, spending as a percentage
  of its limit, and the credit transactions of its members, one line each.

## How team limits work

* A person is on one team at most. Assigning them to another team moves them.
* People on no team are full members and spend from the workspace balance.
* A personal spending limit replaces the team limit for that person; it doesn't add to it. The
  order is: personal limit, then team limit, then the workspace balance. See [Credits and
  spending](/docs/concepts/credits-and-spending).
* A team limit doesn't reserve credits. If the workspace balance runs out, the team's members
  are stopped even while under the team limit.
* Someone stopped by the team limit sees **"This team reached its spending limit. Your workspace
  still has credits."** The fix is to raise the team's limit, not to add credits.
* **"Delete team"** in a team's menu permanently deletes the team and its limit. Its members stay
  in the workspace with all their work, and the next limit in the order applies to them.

## Who can manage teams

Creating, renaming and deleting a team, and setting its limit, need **Change workspace
settings**. Moving people between teams needs **Invite and remove members**, and can also be done
from the **Team** column in **Settings → Members** or on a person's profile, without access to the
Teams page. By default only admins hold both permissions.

## Teams as a governance scope

The **Models** and **Tools** pages can apply rules to a whole team, for example a smaller model
catalog for contractors. See [Model availability](/docs/governance/model-availability) and [Tool
availability](/docs/governance/feature-flags).
