GPT-6 Sol is OpenAI's September 2026 model for complex coding and agentic workflows, carrying much of GPT-6 Astra's strength into a faster model.
GPT-6 Sol arrived on September 22, 2026, about three weeks after GPT-6 Astra. It is built to power complex coding and agentic workflows, bringing much of Astra's capability to a faster, more affordable model, with better alignment than its GPT-5.6 counterpart. It accepts text and images, keeps 1.05M tokens in context and can return up to 128K tokens in one response.
Its reasoning range starts at none, so the same model can answer a quick lookup right away and then work through a failing build at high or max effort. Teams use it to write and refactor code across several files, run workflows that chain many tool calls, and turn long specs into technical documents.
GPT-6.1 Sol has since become the balanced GPT-6 tier, with gains in debugging, document understanding and multi-step work. GPT-6 Sol still fits when you want a no-reasoning mode for fast replies, which GPT-6.1 Sol does not have. For simpler requests at high volume, GPT-6 Luna is the lighter sibling.
