GPT-6.1 Sol is the follow-up to GPT-6 Sol, released by OpenAI in late September 2026. It improves on its predecessor in programming and debugging, document understanding and multi-step workflows, and comes close to GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work. It reads text and images, holds 1.05M tokens of context and writes up to 128K tokens in one response.
Teams pick it for work that unfolds over many steps: tracing a bug through a large repository, reading a stack of contracts and drafting the summary, or planning a multi-stage change before writing any code. It runs at reasoning effort levels from low to max and has no no-reasoning mode, so every answer gets some thinking first.
GPT-6.1 Sol is now the balanced tier of GPT-6, in place of GPT-6 Sol. GPT-6 Astra stays the highest-intelligence option and GPT-6 Luna the fastest and cheapest. In Endless you can switch between all three in the same workspace, with usage drawn from the workspace's shared credits.
