What is an Instagram engagement rate?

An Instagram engagement rate measures how many people interact with an account's posts compared with how many people follow it. The common formula is per post: likes plus comments, divided by followers, times 100. You calculate that for each recent post and take the average. An account with 10,000 followers whose post gets 300 likes and 20 comments has a 3.2% engagement rate on that post.

Follower count alone says little about influence. Followers can be old, inactive or bought. Engagement rate shows whether the audience still responds, which is why brands check it before paying a creator and why creators track it to see if their content is landing. A steady rate across many posts also tells you more than one viral hit.

Rates vary a lot by account size and niche. Smaller accounts often have higher rates than large ones, so compare an account with others of similar size in the same space. Endless reads the public profile and recent posts, runs the formula with code, and shows the per-post numbers so you can check the result.

How it works

  1. 01

    Enter the username

Type a public Instagram username or paste the profile link into the box above.

  2. 02

Sign in and the prompt is ready

Sign up or sign in to Endless. Your workspace chat opens with the calculation already requested, and the agent reads the profile and recent posts.

  3. 03

Get the rate and the numbers behind it

You get the average engagement rate, a per-post table and the best and worst posts. Ask follow-ups, like comparing it with a similar account.

What people use it for

  1. 01

    Vet influencers before paying

Check a creator's engagement rate before a sponsored post. A large following with very low engagement is a warning sign. The per-post table also shows whether the average is steady or carried by one viral post, which matters when you are paying for a typical post, not their best one.

  2. 02

    Track your own engagement

Calculate your rate today and schedule the same calculation to run weekly. Over time you see whether new formats, topics or posting times move the number. Save the results to a project so the agent can compare each week with the last.

  3. 03

    Compare accounts of similar size

Run the calculation for several accounts in your niche and ask the agent for one table. Comparing accounts with similar follower counts gives you a fair benchmark, instead of an industry average that mixes small creators with global brands. Ask it to rank them.

  4. 04

    Report numbers to clients

Agencies can calculate a client's engagement rate, ask the agent to explain the change since the last report, and draft a short summary document. Because the formula and per-post numbers are shown, the client can see exactly how the rate was calculated.

  5. 05

Find the posts that drive engagement

Ask the agent which posts sit well above the account's average rate and what they share: format, topic, caption length or posting day. That turns a single number into a list of things to try in your next posts. Test them one at a time.

  6. 06

    Use a different formula

Some teams count only comments, or divide by views on reels instead of followers. Ask the agent to recalculate with your formula in the same chat. It runs the maths with code, so you can switch definitions without rebuilding a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

For each post, add likes and comments, divide by the account's follower count and multiply by 100. Then average the results across recent posts. Endless does this with code from the public posts it reads and shows the per-post table, so you can check every number. You can ask it to use a different formula if your team prefers one.

  • Is the Instagram engagement rate calculator free?

You can start free. Create a free Endless account and the Free plan gives your workspace 100 credits when you create it and 50 credits every week. Reading a profile and its posts spends credits from that balance, so the free credits cover regular checks. Paid plans add more credits.

  • How much does it cost to calculate engagement?

Each lookup spends credits from your workspace balance. A calculation reads the profile and its recent posts, and reading more posts or more accounts costs more. The calculation itself runs in the chat. Your balance is shown in the workspace, and paid plans add credits if you check many accounts.

  • Does it work with private accounts?

No. Endless only reads public Instagram accounts and posts, and it never asks for a password. For a private account, or one with no recent posts, the agent cannot calculate an engagement rate and will tell you so. You can still calculate the rate for any public account you want to compare.

  • What is the best Instagram engagement rate calculator?

Look for a calculator that uses the account's real recent posts, states its formula, and shows the per-post numbers instead of a single score. Being able to compare accounts and change the formula also helps. Endless reads public posts, calculates with code, shows its work and answers follow-up questions in the chat.

  • What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

There is no single number. Rates depend on account size, niche and format, and smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones. The useful comparison is with accounts of similar size in your space, and with your own past results. Endless can calculate the rate for a few similar accounts so you have a real benchmark.

  • Why is engagement rate better than follower count?

Follower count shows reach on paper. Engagement rate shows how many followers still respond to posts. An account with fewer followers and a higher rate often delivers more interaction per post than a bigger account with a low rate, which is why brands check it before working with a creator.
